The New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association has suspended tomorrow's planned strike action.
Following the Christchurch terror attack, president Jack Boyle said the PPTA executive voted late last month to suspend the day of action.
"At this traumatic time our students, teachers and communities need the stability and security that is provided by our schools.
"Teachers and principals will provide, as they always do, the emotional support and stability required by their students and communities.
To help provide this stability, any protest action and paid union meetings had been suspended until term 2.
Mr Boyle said the ongoing issues undermining teacher recruitment and retention remained and would need to be returned to at an appropriate time.
Members would be asked early next term to consider what actions would be suitable for term 2.
"It is important that we recognise we are not walking away from industrial action or negotiations,'' Mr Boyle said.
"Not proceeding with April 3 means we are ensuring that our campaign has the greatest prospect for success.
"Industrial action is about coming together as a collective, raising public awareness of the issues and putting pressure on the Government.''
